Proofline vs Greptile

Greptile reviews code and can execute it in a sandbox through TREX. Proofline checks how a change interacts with the configuration of its deployment environment.

What Greptile reviews

Greptile builds a repository graph to understand how a change affects other code. Its review workflow includes suggested fixes and handoffs to coding agents.

TREX runs relevant code in a sandbox. It can attach logs, screenshots, and execution scripts to findings, so reviewers can inspect the observed behavior.

What Proofline checks

Proofline combines an exact code revision with a recorded snapshot of the selected environment. It uses infrastructure configuration to investigate dependencies such as network paths, permissions, and resource limits.

Proofline can also run bounded code experiments. Those experiments establish code behavior in the sandbox. A finding about production still needs recorded facts about production. Read about Proofline’s investigations.

A network change blocks the production database

In this illustrative Terraform change, a database ingress rule replaces the API security group with a worker security group. The API still needs database access on port 5432.

A test can show that the API connects to a database in its test environment. Assessing production requires the deployed API’s security-group membership and the database’s applicable access rules.

If the change removes the API’s only permitted path, database connections can fail. Preserving the API rule while adding worker access addresses that failure.

The review must account for other applicable rules before concluding that access is lost. Read the simulated network review.

When execution and infrastructure checks help

Choose Greptile when you want repository analysis and sandbox execution in your review workflow. Add Proofline when a deployment decision also depends on the target infrastructure’s configuration.

For a network change, inspect which environment each result describes. A sandbox result should identify its setup and execution artifacts. A production finding should identify the affected resources and the rules behind its conclusion.

This comparison uses Greptile’s published documentation. The network example is illustrative; it does not report a measured result from either product.
