Link an organization to an enterprise
An enterprise groups organizations for administration. Each organization keeps its own reviews, access and billing.
To create an enterprise or manage its administrators, see Administer an enterprise.
Invite an organization#
- Open Enterprises from your account menu and select the enterprise.
- Open Organizations and select Invite organization.
- Choose an organization you belong to and select Invite.
You must administer the enterprise. The invitation waits for the organization's owner to accept.
Accept an invitation#
- Open Organization → Admin → Enterprise in the invited organization.
- Review the enterprise and its administrators.
- Choose whether to delegate Content retention, Custom roles, both or neither.
- Select Accept link.
Only an organization's GitHub owner can accept or decline. Accepting lets enterprise administrators see the organization's size, usage, roles and audit trail. Delegation determines which policies they may apply.
The organization switcher groups linked organizations beneath the enterprise name. That name and the enterprise heading in Organization → Admin → Enterprise open the enterprise’s Organizations page. Enterprise administrator access is required to view that page.
Enterprise administration does not grant organization membership or repository access. An organization's name opens its workspace only when you already have access to it.
Delegated policies#
Delegated shows which policy kinds the organization owner allowed the enterprise to apply when accepting the link:
- Nothing means the enterprise cannot apply policies. Its administrators can still see the organization's size, usage, roles and audit trail.
- Content retention lets the enterprise set the organization's content-retention windows.
- Custom roles lets the enterprise create and revise roles. It does not assign roles to people.
Delegation permits a policy change; it does not apply one automatically. Enterprise administrators apply a specific version through enterprise policy templates.
Unlink an organization#
Open Organization → Admin → Enterprise, select Unlink from enterprise, then confirm Unlink in the dialog.
An enterprise administrator can also select Unlink on the enterprise's organization list and confirm Unlink organization.
Unlinking removes enterprise access. Settings and roles already applied stay in the organization.
