Use Proofline in ChatGPT and Codex

The Proofline plugin lets you read reviews, ask for repository guidance, and work through setup in chat. It connects to Proofline without a local CLI or a copied API token.

These instructions apply when the plugin is available in your workspace. Access to a private installation does not mean the public listing is available.

Connect your account#

  1. Open the Proofline plugin in ChatGPT or Codex and install it if needed.
  2. Start its Set up action. Follow the connection prompt to Proofline's authorization page.
  3. Check the GitHub account signed in to Proofline. Your ChatGPT or Codex account does not determine your GitHub identity.
  4. Choose the organization you want the plugin to access.
  5. Review the requested permissions and repository access, then select Allow access.
  6. Return to the chat and continue setup.

If you have no available organization, select Install the GitHub App. Complete installation on GitHub, then return and select Check GitHub access. Another administrator may need to approve installation.

GitHub sign-in, GitHub App installation, and plugin authorization are separate approvals. Signing in alone does not grant the plugin access to an organization.

Choose permissions#

The authorization page shows the permissions requested by your client. It cannot add a permission the client has not requested.

PermissionWhat it allows
Read reviewsRead recorded outcomes, assessments, findings and evidence.
Read guidanceRead repository review instructions and environment review focus.
Request reviewsRequest a review for an exact commit. Your GitHub account also needs write access to the repository.
Run setup from a coding agentRead setup and answer its questions for the selected organization.

Setup requires an organization administrator, a browser sign-in from the last 24 hours, and All repositories I can access in this organization. An organization's API token policy can also restrict these permissions.

Choose selected repositories when you only need review access. A connection to one organization does not grant access to another organization.

Work through setup#

Tell the plugin which repository you want to set up. For example:

Set up Proofline for owner/repository. Show what is already configured and ask me the next unanswered question.

The plugin reads saved setup before asking questions. Your answers also appear on Installation in Proofline, so you can continue there.

When setup needs cloud access or configuration approval, open the browser link supplied by the plugin. Review and approve the change in Proofline, then return to chat and ask it to continue. A message saying “approved” does not replace the browser approval.

If you defer the environment, setup can continue with code reviews. Those reviews do not establish whether a change is safe for a deployment environment. Connect and confirm an environment before expecting an environment assessment. See Guided setup.

Read a review or request one#

Give the plugin a pull request URL and say what you need:

Read Proofline's review of this pull request. Include the reviewed commit, environment assessments, serious findings, and missing evidence.

Check the reviewed commit before using the result. A completed review of an earlier commit does not cover later changes. Follow the evidence links to inspect findings in Proofline.

To request a review, ask for a specific commit and repository. This requires Request reviews permission and uses the organization's normal review usage. Proofline may return an existing review for the same commit instead of starting another. A request does not automatically publish the result to GitHub.

For repository guidance, ask:

What review instructions and environment context should I follow before changing this repository?

If the plugin cannot perform an action, use Fix a ChatGPT or Codex connection. Do not paste passwords or tokens into chat.
